Human Rights Violations Updates in Arakan

Social Activist and young writer Wai Hun Aung arrested by the Sittway police

Today on 16 January , 2018 two human rights violations cases have been occurred in Arakan state . The two cases are as follows:
1. Mr. Wai Hun Aung , a young Arakanese/Rakhine writer also a social worker was arrested from his residence in Sittway the capital city of Arakan state by the Sittway police chief Aye Khine Maung at around 5:16 PM on Tuesday 16 January , 2018.
According to his elder brother U Thein Won , the authority arrested his brother (Wai Hun Aung) under the section 505 (b) of Myanmar Penal Code which states that whoever makes, publishes or circulates any statement, rumour or report, with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility; shall be punished two years imprisonment or with fine.
He spoke at a literary talk ceremony in village in Rathedaung township on 15 January , 2017 but the issue he talked during the literary talk event was still unknown yet . According to AASYC field worker he (Wai Hun Aung) is now being taken to Rathedaung police custody from Sittway by the local authority .

2. A Literary Talk Show was forced to postponed by the local authority in Mrauk U
The literary talk show on the occasion of the memory of the Arakanese national sovereignty fallen day which has been happening since 15 January and the 16 January's evening session has been banned by the Mrauk U local authority on Tuesday.
The authority did not give permission to let the evening session go forward at the ancient palace ruined sites of Mrauk U , Arakan state . The authority banned the ceremony by giving reason that the organizers did not submit the permission letter to hold the event citing the article 18 of the Myanmar's peaceful assembly act which requires a permission or to provide prior information regarding with any peaceful events , assemble or demonstrations.
Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) says that everyone has the right to peaceful assembly and association . No one may be compelled to belong to an association.
